  1. Descale the machine

  2. Check the water reservoir is seated fully

    Remove and reseat it, confirming it clicks or drops fully into place. A reservoir sitting even slightly off its seal can prevent the machine from drawing water at all.

  3. Check the water level and refill fully

    Running a machine with very little water, or letting it run dry, can trip an internal safety thermostat on some models, which then prevents the machine from heating again until it has cooled and reset.

  4. Clean the brew basket or portafilter

    On espresso and pod-style machines, remove and thoroughly clean the brew basket or portafilter of old coffee grounds and oils, which build up and restrict flow in the same way scale does elsewhere in the machine.

  5. Check for an air lock

    If the machine stopped suddenly after being moved or refilled, try running a brew cycle with just water and no coffee a couple of times — this sometimes clears a trapped air pocket in the line.

  6. Let it cool and reset if recently run dry

    If the reservoir was empty recently, unplug the machine, let it cool for at least thirty minutes, then try again — some safety thermostats reset automatically once the machine has cooled sufficiently.

Drip coffee makers have the simplest water path and are the most forgiving of scale build-up, generally showing a gradual decline rather than a sudden stop. Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair.
