Frost needs moisture, and the moisture comes from air entering the freezer — so heavy frost is almost always an air-leak story or a defrost-system story. Even, fluffy frost near the door points at warm air leaking in past the seal. A hard ice sheet on the back panel points at the defrost system failing. The two look similar and have completely different fixes.

How to work through it
- Test the door seal all the way round
Close the door on a strip of paper and pull, repeating at several points around the frame. Anywhere it slides out freely, the seal is not gripping. Clean the seal with warm soapy water first — a dirty seal often fails the test and passes it once cleaned.
- Check the door actually closes
An overfull drawer or a protruding bag can hold the door fractionally open without it being obvious. Confirm nothing blocks the door and that it swings fully home on its own.
- Defrost fully if build-up is heavy
Empty the freezer, unplug the appliance, and let it thaw completely with towels down — do not chip at ice, which risks puncturing the evaporator. A full thaw also resets the situation so you can watch what happens next.
- Watch the pattern after restart
Frost returning quickly near the door repeats the seal story. A new ice sheet forming on the back panel over days or weeks confirms the defrost system case below.
- Check the temperature setting
−18°C (0°F) is the target. Colder settings increase frost formation without meaningfully improving food storage.
The defrost system case
Frost-free freezers rely on a heater that briefly melts frost off the evaporator several times a day. When that system fails — the heater, its thermostat, or the timer/control that triggers it — frost accumulates into a solid ice layer that eventually blocks airflow, which is the same failure chain covered in our freezer cold but fridge warm guide. When to call an engineer
Call an engineer if ice rebuilds rapidly after a complete thaw with a confirmed good door seal, if the ice specifically forms as a sheet on the back panel, or if frost is paired with the fridge compartment warming — the combination points firmly at the defrost system rather than air leakage.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
