An espresso machine leak almost always comes from one of a small number of predictable points: the group head seal, the portafilter gasket, an internal hose connection, or scale buildup forcing water to find an unintended path out. Where exactly the water appears is the clearest clue to which one.

How to fix it
- Check portafilter technique first
Confirm you are locking it in fully and at the correct angle — a portafilter that is not seated properly is the simplest explanation and costs nothing to rule out.
- Inspect the group head gasket
Look at the rubber ring around the group head for cracking, flattening, or an uneven surface. This is a routine, inexpensive part to replace on most machines.
- Descale the machine
If you cannot recall the last descale, or you are in a hard-water area, run a full descaling cycle — this is safe, standard maintenance and often resolves a mysterious slow leak.
- Check underneath and at the steam wand base
Run the machine empty of coffee and watch closely for exactly where water first appears, which narrows things down considerably before opening the machine.
When to call a technician
If the group head gasket looks fine and descaling does not resolve a persistent leak, or if you suspect an internal hose or valve, have a technician open the machine and inspect — commercial-style espresso machines in particular are worth having serviced professionally given the number of internal components.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
