The most common cause of a smart doorbell that has stopped recording is a WiFi disconnection the app has not clearly surfaced — the doorbell drops offline intermittently, and recordings for that window simply never happen. After connectivity, check whether motion detection or recording rules were accidentally disabled, and confirm any required cloud subscription has not lapsed.
Check the WiFi connection first
Most smart doorbell apps include a connection check tool specifically for this — use it rather than assuming the doorbell is online just because the app shows a recent thumbnail. A doorbell mounted at the front door is often at the edge of home WiFi range, making it more prone to periodic disconnections than devices closer to the router.
Check motion detection is actually enabled
- Open the camera or doorbell’s device settings
Not the general app settings — the settings specific to that device.
- Confirm the camera itself is enabled
Some apps allow individual cameras to be toggled off without a clear indicator on the main dashboard.
- Confirm motion detection or the specific detection mode is turned on
Recording that relies on motion triggers will not create clips at all if this is switched off, even though the doorbell otherwise appears to be working.
Check for automation rules blocking recording
Many smart home apps let you create schedules or rules that disable motion sensing during certain hours or conditions (for example, when you are marked as “home”). A rule set up for a specific purpose can end up silently blocking recordings at times you did not intend — review any active automations tied to this device before assuming a hardware fault.
Check subscription and cloud storage status
Many doorbell apps cache subscription and recording-rule data locally, which can continue showing outdated information even after a plan lapses or changes. Log out and back in, or reboot the app fully, to force it to pull the current subscription and recording status from the server rather than relying on what it last cached.
Force a full app resync
Beyond subscription status, a full log-out-and-back-in cycle also resyncs recording rules and device settings that might otherwise be stuck on stale local data. This is a low-effort step worth trying before deeper troubleshooting, especially if recordings stopped suddenly with no known configuration change on your end.
Power and battery-specific checks
Battery-powered doorbells that are running low can sometimes reduce recording frequency or quality to conserve power before actually dying completely — check battery level even if the doorbell still appears functional otherwise. Wired doorbells losing consistent power (a loose wire connection, for instance) can produce similar intermittent recording gaps.
