How the auto-shutoff is supposed to work

What to check

  1. Descale the kettle thoroughly

  3. Clean the steam vent

    Locate the vent, usually near the spout or under the lid, and check it is not blocked by scale or residue. Clear it gently — do not use anything that could push debris further in rather than out.

  4. Check you are not underfilling it

    Most kettles need a minimum amount of water to generate enough steam to trigger the shutoff reliably. Check your model’s minimum fill line and confirm you are meeting it.

  5. Watch it closely on the next few uses

    After cleaning, watch it boil rather than walking away, and note whether it switches off closer to the correct point. If descaling and a clean vent resolve it, you have found the cause.
