Most blenders have a safety interlock switch that will not let the motor run unless the jar is seated exactly right on the base. A blender that will not turn on is, more often than not, a jar that has not engaged that switch fully — not a dead motor.
The safety interlock
The interlock exists to stop the blades from running unless the jar is properly locked onto the base — a genuine safety feature that prevents the motor engaging with the jar removed or misaligned. It is also, by a wide margin, the most common reason a blender that is otherwise completely fine appears “dead.”

How to check it
- Reseat the jar carefully
Remove it completely and refit it, making sure it twists or locks fully into place per your model’s specific mechanism.
- Clean the base and jar bottom
Wipe away any dried food or liquid residue where the jar contacts the base — this can prevent the interlock from engaging properly.
- Test the outlet
Plug in a different appliance to the same outlet to rule out a dead socket or tripped breaker.
- Check the blade assembly
If the jar has been recently disassembled for cleaning, confirm the blade unit is seated correctly in the base of the jar.
- Allow time if it recently overloaded
Many blenders have thermal overload protection that trips after processing something too thick or too full, and needs a rest period — often 15–30 minutes — before it will run again.
When to call it a motor issue
If the jar seats and locks correctly, the outlet is confirmed working, and the blade assembly is seated properly, but the blender still will not run even after a rest period, the motor or the internal switch has likely failed — for most household blenders, replacement is usually more practical than a repair given the relatively low cost of the appliance.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
