E18 means the Bosch washing machine cannot drain the water. A blocked drain pump filter is the leading cause by far, followed by a kinked or blocked drain hose. A faulty pump is possible but much less common.
What E18 means
The machine’s drain phase runs the pump and checks the water level has dropped as expected. If it has not, it stops and displays E18 rather than proceed to a spin with water still in the tub.

How to fix it
Water will run out when the filter is opened. Unplug the machine and lay towels down before you start.
- Locate and open the pump filter
It is typically on the lower front right corner of the machine behind a small door. Turn it to release and withdraw it slowly.
- Clear the filter and housing
Remove any lint, coins or debris and rinse the filter under a tap before refitting it firmly.
- Check the drain hose
Straighten out any bend and confirm nothing is lodged inside it.
- Test the machine
Refit the filter, plug the machine back in, and run a short cycle while watching the drain phase and checking for leaks around the filter.
When to call a professional
If the machine is still not pumping out water after the filter and hose are confirmed clear, the drain pump itself is likely defective and needs professional replacement.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
