An LG washer that will not drain — usually with an OE code — is blocked far more often than it is broken. The drain pump filter at the bottom front of the machine is the first thing to check, and it clears the fault in most cases. Coins, hair grips, buttons and lint collect there and stop the pump moving water.
What OE means
OE is LG’s drain error. The machine ran its drain phase, then checked the water level with its pressure sensor and found water still sitting in the tub. It stops rather than attempting a spin, because spinning a drum full of water is hard on the bearings and can throw the machine badly out of balance.
The message is simply “water did not leave in the time allowed”. Your job is to find where it is being held up.

How to fix it
Unplug the washer at the wall before you open anything. The drum may still hold 10–20 litres, and it will come out of the filter housing. Have towels down, a shallow tray ready, and expect the water to be dirty. If the last cycle was a hot wash, let it cool first.
- Drain the machine down first
Most LG washers have a small drain tube tucked beside the pump filter behind the bottom access flap. Pull it out, hold it over a low tray, remove its cap and let the water run out. Emptying through this tube first means far less water on the floor when you open the filter itself.
- Open and clean the pump filter
Turn the filter cap anticlockwise and withdraw it. Expect coins, hair grips, screws and a felt of lint. Rinse the filter under a tap, clear the housing with your fingers, and check the impeller you can see inside — it should spin freely by hand. If it is stiff or jammed, work the obstruction out.
- Check the drain hose along its length
Pull the machine forward. Straighten any kink, then disconnect the hose at the standpipe end and check for a blockage by running water through it. A hose pushed more than about 10–15 cm into the standpipe can also seal against the pipe wall and stop the machine draining properly.
- Confirm the standpipe itself is clear
Pour a few litres of water down the standpipe. It should disappear quickly. If it backs up, the blockage is in your household plumbing rather than the washer — clearing the appliance will not help until the drain is cleared.
- Check the hose height
The top of the drain hose should sit roughly 60–100 cm above the floor. Too low and the machine siphons — water drains out as fast as it fills, and cycles never complete properly. Too high and the pump struggles to lift the water.
- Refit and test
Screw the filter cap back in firmly — it seals against a rubber gasket, and a loose cap leaks onto the floor during the next wash. Plug the machine back in and run a rinse-and-spin. Watch the filter area for drips through the whole cycle.
During the drain phase you should clearly hear the pump running. Complete silence with a clean filter usually points to a failed pump or its wiring. A pump that hums but moves nothing is more often still obstructed.
Keeping it from happening again
- Empty pockets before washing — coins are the single biggest cause of jammed impellers.
- Use a mesh laundry bag for underwired bras; a sprung wire through a pump is an expensive repair.
- Clean the pump filter every two to three months as routine, not only when something goes wrong.
- Leave the door and detergent drawer ajar between washes so the drum dries out.
When to call a professional
If the filter and hoses are clear, the standpipe drains freely, and the pump is silent when it should be running, the pump or its control circuit has most likely failed. Replacing it means tipping the machine, disconnecting live wiring and breaking a water seal.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
