5C and 5E both mean the same thing on a Samsung washer: the machine could not drain properly. The cause is almost always a clogged drain pump filter, a blocked or kinked drain hose, or — less often — a failing drain pump.
What 5C / 5E means
During the drain phase, the pump runs and the water level sensor checks that the tub has actually emptied. If it has not emptied in the time the machine allows, it stops and reports 5C or 5E rather than attempt a spin with water still in the drum.

How to fix it
Unplug the washer before opening the filter. The drum can hold several litres even after a failed drain — have towels and a shallow tray ready.
- Open the drain filter
It sits behind a small flap at the bottom front of the machine. Many models have a short drain tube beside it — pull that out first and let residual water run into a tray before opening the filter cap itself.
- Clean the filter and housing
Turn the cap anticlockwise, withdraw it, and clear out whatever has collected — coins, hair grips, buttons and lint are typical. Rinse the filter and check the impeller behind it turns freely by hand.
- Check the drain hose
Pull the machine out and straighten the hose along its length. Disconnect it at the standpipe end and check nothing is blocking it internally.
- Confirm hose installation
The hose should not be pushed more than about 10–15 cm into the standpipe, and should sit within the height range given in the manual — too low and the machine can siphon continuously.
- Refit and test
Screw the filter cap back in firmly against its seal, plug the machine back in, and run a short rinse-and-spin while you watch for leaks around the filter.
When to call a professional
If the filter and hose are both clear but the pump stays silent during the drain phase, the pump or its wiring has likely failed and needs professional replacement.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
