On a Mitsubishi Electric mini split, E-codes are communication and control faults, P-codes are indoor unit faults (sensors, drains, freeze and overheat protection), and U-codes are outdoor unit faults. P4, P5 and P6 usually come down to a blocked drain or a dirty filter and are worth checking yourself. E6 and any U-code mean wiring, sensors or the refrigerant circuit — book a technician.
How to read the code
Depending on the model, a Mitsubishi mini split reports faults in one of three ways: as a two-character code on a wired controller or the indoor unit display, as a blink pattern on the indoor unit’s operation LED, or through the self-diagnosis function on the outdoor board. The codes below are the M-series set used on most residential wall-mounted and floor-standing indoor units.
Codes and their exact wording vary between model generations. If you have the model number to hand — it is on a sticker inside the right-hand side of the indoor unit or on the outdoor unit’s data plate — Mitsubishi’s service manual for that model is the authoritative source.
The three code families
The first character tells you where the system thinks the fault is, which is often more useful than the code itself:
- E — communication and control faults. Something in the signal path between the indoor unit, outdoor unit and remote controller is not working.
- P — indoor unit protection faults. A sensor is out of range, a drain is not clearing, or a coil is freezing or overheating.
- U — outdoor unit faults. Sensors, the compressor, the inverter or the refrigerant circuit.
As a rule of thumb, P-codes are the ones with a realistic homeowner fix. E- and U-codes almost always need tools and training.

What to check first
Turn the system off at the remote, then switch off the breaker that supplies the outdoor unit before you open anything or pull the indoor unit’s front cover. Do not remove the electrical cover from the outdoor unit at all — that is technician territory, powered or not.
- Clean the indoor filters
Lift the front panel of the indoor head and slide the mesh filters out. Rinse them in lukewarm water, let them dry fully, and refit. A clogged filter starves the coil of air and is the single most common root cause behind P6 and P8. Doing this every month in the cooling season prevents most of these codes.
- Clear the condensate drain for P4 and P5
The drain line leaves the indoor head and runs to the outside. Check the outdoor end is not blocked by insects, mud or a collapsed pipe, and that the line runs continuously downhill with no sag holding water. Mini splits drain by gravity on most installs, so a small blockage is enough to trip the float switch.
- Check airflow at the outdoor unit
Clear leaves, grass clippings and plant growth from around the outdoor unit and make sure nothing is stacked against it. A condenser that cannot reject heat pushes pressures and pipe temperatures out of range, which is what P8 is complaining about.
- Look at the interconnecting cable for E6
Without opening any covers, follow the cable between the indoor and outdoor units. Look for crushing where it passes through the wall, rodent damage, or a section that has been pulled tight. If you can see visible damage, that is your answer — but the repair is a technician’s job because the same cable carries mains voltage.
- Power cycle once and note what happens
Switch the breaker off for at least two minutes, then back on, and restart the system. Record the code, how quickly it returns, and what the unit was doing at the time. If the code comes back immediately, do not keep resetting it.
U-codes report outdoor unit faults, and several of them exist to protect the compressor. Forcing the system to run past a compressor or refrigerant protection code can destroy the compressor — a repair costing several times what the original fault would have. If a U-code returns after one reset, leave the system off and call a technician.
When to call a professional
Book a technician for any E-code that survives a power cycle, any U-code, any code that returns within minutes, and any P6 or P8 that persists after you have cleaned the filters and cleared the outdoor unit — at that point the likely cause is low refrigerant, which is a leak that needs finding and repairing by someone with the certification to handle refrigerant. Sensor replacements for P1, P2 and U4 are inexpensive parts but need the unit opened and the correct thermistor for the model.
