F20 — heating fault
F20 is a heating timeout: the water did not reach its target temperature within the time the selected programme allows. The heating element itself has burned out or developed an open circuit in roughly half of cases — the single most common cause — with the rest split between mineral deposits insulating the element, a faulty temperature sensor giving incorrect readings, or a loose connector or failed relay in the heater circuit.

- Check local water hardness
In hard-water areas, descale more frequently as routine maintenance rather than only after a fault appears.
- Power cycle and retest
After descaling, unplug the machine briefly, restart it, and run a normal cycle to see whether the code has cleared.
The flow meter itself may need manual descaling, which typically requires partial disassembly — this is a job for a technician rather than an external descaling cycle alone.
When to call a professional
If F20 persists after descaling, the heating element has most likely burned out and needs replacement — by far the most common outcome for this code. Have a technician test the element, the temperature sensor and the heater relay before replacing parts.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair.
