Dead, or lit but not starting?

These are two different faults and they are worth separating before you spend any time on either.

  • Completely dead — no display, no lights, no click when you press the button. The machine is not receiving power, or is not switching it through.
  • Lit but inert — the display works and buttons respond, but pressing start achieves nothing, or the cycle begins and immediately pauses. The machine has power and is refusing to proceed for a reason.

If the machine is completely dead

Isolate before inspecting the plug or cable

Switch off at the wall and unplug before examining the plug, cable or socket. If you find scorching, melted plastic or a burning smell at any of them, do not plug it back in — that needs an electrician.

  1. Test the socket with something else

    Plug in a lamp or a phone charger. If that is dead too, the problem is the socket or the circuit, not the washing machine.

  2. Check the breaker and RCD

    Look at the consumer unit. A breaker can trip only partly and still look on — switch it fully off and back on. An RCD that trips the moment the machine is plugged in points to a genuine electrical fault in the appliance, and that needs professional attention rather than repeated resets.

  3. Inspect the cable and plug

    Look along the whole cable for crushing or damage, especially where it passes behind the machine. Machines pushed hard against a wall can trap and eventually cut through their own cable.

  4. Avoid extension leads

    Washing machines draw heavily, particularly while heating. Run the machine from a wall socket directly. A marginal extension lead can drop enough voltage to stop a machine starting reliably.

If the socket is live, the cable is sound and the machine is still completely dead, the fault is inside — the mains filter, the on/off switch or the control board. That is where DIY reasonably stops.

If it lights up but will not begin

  1. Close the door properly

    Open it and shut it again firmly until you hear the interlock click. Run a finger round the seal for a trapped sock or a corner of fabric holding it fractionally open — a door that looks closed but has not latched will stop everything.

  2. Check for a child lock

    Almost every machine has one, and it is easy to enable by accident. Look for a padlock or key symbol on the display. It is usually cleared by holding two specific buttons for a few seconds — the combination is printed on the control panel or in the manual.

  3. Check for a delay start

    If the display shows a time counting down rather than a cycle running, a delayed start is set. Cancel it and start the programme directly.

  4. Open the water taps

    Many machines lock the door and then sit waiting for water. From the outside this looks like a machine that will not start. Open both taps fully and straighten the inlet hoses.

  5. Press and hold start

    Some models need the start button held for two or three seconds rather than tapped. Worth a try before assuming anything is broken.

  6. Reset the machine

    Unplug for a full minute, then plug back in and select a short cycle. Control boards latch faults and occasionally hold them after the cause has cleared.

  7. Let it cool if it stopped mid-cycle

    If the machine ran and then stopped and now will not restart, the motor’s thermal overload may have tripped. Leave it for an hour and try again. If it repeats, the motor is working too hard — often because of an overloaded drum or a seized bearing.

Check the display for a code

A machine refusing to start often shows a code explaining why. Water supply codes (Samsung 4C/4E, LG IE) and door codes (Samsung DC, LG dE) are the two you will meet most. Codes vary between model generations, so check the documentation for your exact model rather than assuming.
