3E (and the related 3E1–3E4 variants) signals a fault with the motor Hall sensor — the control board is not receiving a correct signal about the motor’s speed or position. An overloaded drum putting excess load on the motor is the most common trigger; a loose wiring connector at the motor is the next most common.
What 3E means
The Hall sensor (sometimes called the tacho sensor) tells the control board how fast and in which direction the motor is turning. If the board gets no signal, a weak signal, or a signal that does not match what it expects, it shuts the motor down to protect it and displays 3E rather than keep driving a motor it cannot properly monitor.

How to fix it
- Reduce the load size
Run a smaller, more typical load. If 3E only appears on large or heavy loads, an overloaded drum is straining the motor beyond what the sensor expects.
- Power cycle the machine
Unplug for about a minute, plug back in, and try a normal cycle. This clears a latched fault in some cases.
- Check for an obstruction
With the machine unplugged and empty, turn the drum by hand. It should move freely with no grinding or catching. Remove any object you find.
- Inspect the wiring harness
With the machine unplugged, remove the small rear access panel and check the connector between the motor, the Hall sensor and the main control board is fully seated and undamaged.
Working past the wiring harness involves the main control board and motor windings, and on some models a residual charge in nearby capacitors. This is technician territory.
When to call a professional
If 3E persists with a normal-sized load, a clear drum and a firmly connected harness, the Hall sensor or the motor itself has likely failed and needs professional replacement.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
