Do not start by taking panels off. Start by working out when the water appears. A leak during fill points to the inlet side. A leak during wash points to the door seal or a hose clip. A leak during drain points to the pump filter or drain hose. A puddle that appears while the machine sits idle points to the inlet valve or a tap connection. That one observation eliminates most of the possibilities before you touch anything.
Time the leak first
Put dry paper towel or newspaper under and around the machine, run a short cycle, and check every few minutes. Note the moment the first water appears.

Finding it step by step
Unplug the machine at the wall before pulling it out or reaching underneath. Mop up standing water before you start — a wet floor next to a machine you are about to move is how people get hurt. If water has clearly reached the electrical components inside the cabinet, stop and call an engineer.
- Check the pump filter cap first
This is the single most common cause, and it is almost always recent. The cap seals against a rubber gasket and needs to be screwed home firmly. Take it out, check the gasket is present, clean and undamaged, then refit it tightly. If someone cleaned the filter shortly before the leak started, you have very likely found it.
- Inspect the door seal all the way round
Pull the rubber gently open and run a finger through the fold. Look for splits, tears, hardened patches and trapped grit. Debris in the fold holds the seal open just enough to let water past during the wash. A torn seal cannot be patched reliably — it needs replacing.
- Check the hose connections at the back
Feel around the inlet hose connections at both the tap and the machine. Weeping here shows up as damp even when the machine is idle. Hand-tighten the couplings; do not overtighten, as the washers inside crush and then leak worse. Check the drain hose is clipped securely and has no splits.
- Look at the detergent drawer
Pull the drawer right out and look into the housing. A build-up of detergent sludge blocks the water path and causes it to overflow forward and run down the front of the machine. Wash the drawer and scrub the housing roof with an old toothbrush.
- Run a cycle with the machine pulled out
With a clear view and dry paper down, run a rinse and spin and watch. Note where the first drop lands. Water tracks along the base before it emerges, so the puddle is often not directly under the fault — look for the highest wet point, not the biggest wet patch.
- Check the drain hose height and standpipe
The hose end should sit roughly 60–100 cm above the floor and must not be pushed too far into the standpipe. If the standpipe backs up during drain, water can be forced out around the hose rather than leaking from the machine at all.
The base tray of a washing machine slopes. A leak from the back right can appear as a puddle at the front left. Always trace upwards from the wet area to find the highest point water is coming from, rather than assuming the fault is directly above the puddle.
When it is not a leak at all
Two situations look exactly like a leak and are not:
- Too much detergent. Excess foam is forced past seals that are in perfectly good condition. If you see suds in the puddle, or the drum is full of foam at the end of the cycle, halve the dose and run a rinse cycle. Modern machines and concentrated detergents need far less than most people use — and liquid capsules are easy to over-dose in a soft water area.
- Household plumbing backing up. If the standpipe or sink trap the machine drains into is blocked, water comes back up and spills at the connection. Pour a few litres down the standpipe with the machine off: if it does not disappear quickly, the fault is your drain, not your washer. Our drainage guide covers this.
When to call a professional
Call an appliance engineer if the leak comes from underneath the drum rather than a hose or seal, if you find a cracked pump housing or sump, if the leak is accompanied by a rumble that rises with spin speed, or if you cannot locate the source after a full inspection. A leak plus bearing noise usually means the drum shaft seal has failed, and on most modern machines that is a tub-assembly job that rarely makes economic sense.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
