Dishes that come out wet or spotty despite a completed cycle are most often a rinse aid problem, not a broken heater. Rinse aid is what makes water sheet off dishes instead of forming droplets, and running out of it is the single most common cause of poor drying — check that before anything else.
Why dishes stay wet
Most dishwashers dry using residual heat rather than a dedicated heating cycle — the hot water from the final rinse evaporates off the dishes as they cool. Rinse aid helps that water sheet off cleanly instead of beading up and sitting there. Take either the heat or the rinse aid out of the equation and drying suffers noticeably.

If the reservoir stays full cycle after cycle despite being refilled, the cap or dispenser mechanism may be stuck — check it opens and closes freely.
- Use the hottest suitable wash setting
A hotter final rinse leaves more residual heat for evaporation. Use the heated-dry setting if your model has one.
- Load with airflow in mind
Avoid nesting bowls or plates tightly together, and angle items so water can run off rather than pool in a concave surface.
- Test the heating element
If dishes come out genuinely cold rather than just damp, check the heating element for a visible break, with the machine unplugged.
Why plastic is always the worst offender
Plastic holds far less heat than glass, ceramic or metal, so it cools — and stops evaporating water — much faster. Some residual dampness on plastic containers at the end of a cycle is normal even in a perfectly working dishwasher, and is not usually worth chasing as a fault.
When to call a professional
If rinse aid is topped up and dispensing properly, the wash temperature is set appropriately, and dishes are still coming out cold rather than just slightly damp, have a technician test the heating element and its wiring.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
