A fridge that stays cold while the freezer will not — the reverse of the more common pattern — usually points to something specific to the freezer compartment: a blocked vent, an iced-over evaporator, or an overloaded freezer restricting airflow. Because the fridge side is proving the cooling system itself works, you can rule out a great deal before assuming a major part has failed.

Because the fridge compartment is cold, the compressor and refrigerant circuit are doing their job. That narrows the search to whatever is specific to the freezer side — airflow into and within that compartment, or a fault local to its own components.

- Check the door seal
Close the door on a piece of paper and pull — it should resist. Clean the gasket and check for tears or a section that has come loose.
- Look for a frosted evaporator
If you can access the back panel, check whether the coil is lightly frosted (normal) or encased in a thick block of ice (a defrost fault).
- Listen for the evaporator fan
Open the freezer and press the door switch. You should hear the fan running — silence with everything else checked points to a fan or wiring fault.
When to call a professional
If the vents are clear, the door seals properly, and there is no heavy ice buildup, but the freezer still will not get cold, have a technician check the evaporator fan motor and the defrost system.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
