Modern GE washers (2017 and newer electronic control models) use a Consumer Help Indicator system specifically designed so that most messages point to something you can fix yourself — dE means the lid is open, UE means the load is unbalanced, and H2O SUPPLY usually just means a water valve was left closed. Only FE (critical water level) is documented as needing an immediate call for service.
The documented code list
| Message | What GE’s official Consumer Help Indicator documentation says |
|---|---|
| Spin or Spin & Rinse light blinking | An out-of-balance condition was detected; the washer is taking corrective action automatically |
| H2O SUPPLY, IE, or Wash/Rinse lights blinking | Water is not entering the washer — check that supply valves are open |
| CAnCELEd | The machine paused over 24 hours, or stopped itself due to certain errors |
| Lid or Lid Locked | 3 cycles were started without opening the lid; the washer will not start another until it is opened |
| dE | Indicates the lid is open |
| UE | The laundry load is unbalanced |
| FE | Water has reached a critical level — turn off water and power, and call service |
H2O SUPPLY / IE: Water not entering the washer
Check your house water supply first — specifically, whether one or both supply valves were left closed after installation or after returning from a period away. GE’s documentation notes the washer initiates a 4-minute lockout as soon as this message starts scrolling, during which the controls will not respond; trying to bypass this by unplugging the washer simply restarts the same 4-minute timer rather than clearing it faster.
Spin light blinking / UE: Unbalanced load
- Let the washer attempt its own correction first
A blinking Spin light means the washer has already detected the imbalance and is actively taking steps to correct it and complete the cycle.
- Check the load if it comes out wetter than expected
If the washer was not able to fully balance and spin at full speed, redistribute the load evenly in the basket.
- Run a dedicated Spin cycle if needed
Select Normal and press the Process button until only the Spin light is on, per GE’s documented method for re-spinning an already-washed load.
UE on top-load models with a lid indicates the same underlying issue — reposition the laundry evenly and confirm the washer itself is level.
Lid / Lid Locked / dE: Lid-related messages
“Lid” appears if 3 cycles were started without the lid ever being opened — the washer will not start a new cycle until it registers the lid opening at least once. dE simply indicates the lid is currently open. Both resolve by opening and then closing the lid before starting the next cycle; if the message persists with the lid confirmed closed, GE’s documentation points to contacting service.
CAnCELEd
This message appears if the machine was paused for more than 24 hours, or stopped itself due to certain internal errors. Like the H2O SUPPLY message, it triggers a 4-minute lockout period before the controls respond again — unplugging to try to skip this simply restarts the same timer.
FE: Critical water level — stop and call service
GE’s own documentation is explicit here: FE means water has reached a critical level, and the correct response is to turn off both water and power to the washer and call for service — not to keep running cycles or attempting further self-diagnosis.
When self-help does not resolve it
GE notes that messages can vary by specific model — check your owner’s manual for anything not covered here. Outside of FE, if a message persists after following the documented remedy above, GE’s guidance across the board is the same: contact service rather than continuing to reset repeatedly.
