Oven faults split cleanly by fuel type and by which part of the appliance is affected. Electric ovens fail mostly at the heating element or its igniter-equivalent components; gas ovens fail mostly at the igniter or gas valve. Both share faults around the door, the temperature sensor, and the control board. Knowing which category your fault falls into narrows the list fast.
Gas or electric changes everything
An electric oven heats using one or two resistive elements you can usually see glowing when the oven is working. A gas oven heats using a burner ignited either by a standing pilot (older models) or an electric igniter (most modern ones), with no visible glowing element. This single distinction determines which half of the troubleshooting applies, since the failure points are almost entirely different between the two.

Understanding elements and igniters
On an electric oven, the bake element (bottom) and broil element (top) are separate circuits, and it is entirely possible for one to fail while the other works fine — a common pattern is an oven that broils normally but will not bake, or vice versa. A visibly glowing element that looks orange across its whole length is working; a dark section or an element that never glows at all has failed at that point.
On a gas oven, the igniter has to draw enough current to glow hot enough to open the gas valve and light the burner — a process that normally takes something like 30 to 90 seconds. An igniter that glows but never gets hot enough to open the valve, or one that has stopped glowing altogether, is the most common single point of failure in a gas oven.
The safety line for gas ovens
Checking whether an igniter glows, confirming the gas supply valve is open, and basic external cleaning are reasonable homeowner checks. Adjusting or replacing gas valves, working on burner assemblies, and anything involving disconnecting gas lines belongs with a licensed gas engineer. When to call an appliance engineer
Call an engineer for element replacement beyond a simple like-for-like swap on some models, for temperature sensor or control board faults, for any self-clean lock that will not release, and for anything involving the oven’s internal wiring. Call a licensed gas engineer specifically for igniter, gas valve, or burner work on a gas oven.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
