Gradual weakening points at limescale in the shower head; a sudden change points at something upstream. Scale builds in the spray nozzles over months and is cleared with a vinegar soak in an hour. Gradual or sudden?
This single question does most of the diagnostic work. Scale accumulates slowly, so a shower that has faded over months fits the scale story. A shower that was fine yesterday and weak today has not scaled up overnight — look instead at the isolation valves, recent plumbing work, or a whole-house pressure change.

The vinegar soak, done properly
- Unscrew the shower head
Most heads unscrew from the hose or arm by hand; use a cloth-wrapped wrench only if needed. Note any washer or filter screen inside the connection and set it aside safely.
- Soak it in white vinegar
Submerge the head in a bowl of undiluted white vinegar for at least an hour — overnight for heavy build-up. For heads that cannot be removed, fill a plastic bag with vinegar, secure it over the head with a rubber band, and leave it the same way.
- Scrub the nozzles
After soaking, scrub the spray face with an old toothbrush. On heads with rubber nozzles, rub each nozzle with a fingertip — the flexible rubber cracks scale loose better than brushing alone.
- Clear the filter screen
Rinse the small mesh screen at the connection point, which traps debris from the supply and clogs quietly over time.
- Flush before refitting
Run the shower briefly without the head attached to flush any loosened debris out of the hose or arm, then refit the head with its washer.
- Check the hose too, on handheld units
Straighten the hose and check for internal collapse — an old hose can delaminate inside and restrict flow invisibly. If flow improves dramatically with the head removed but stays weak through the hose, replace the hose.
Many modern shower heads ship with a small flow restrictor disc in the connection. This is deliberate — it saves water — but a restrictor part-blocked with grit gives noticeably worse flow than designed. Cleaning it (or knowingly deciding whether to keep it) is worth doing while the head is off.
When the shower head is not the problem
If a vinegar-cleaned head with a clear filter is still weak, test other taps in the bathroom and elsewhere in the house. Weakness that extends beyond the shower is an upstream issue — a partly closed isolation valve, a failing pressure reducing valve, or supply-side pressure — covered end to end in our low water pressure guide. Weak hot water specifically, with strong cold, points at the water heater side or the mixer cartridge rather than pipework.
When to call a plumber
Call a plumber if the mixer valve or cartridge is the suspect (weak or unstable hot side), if an isolation valve is seized, or if the weak flow traces upstream beyond anything accessible at the fixture. The shower head and hose themselves are consumable parts — if cleaning does not restore an old head, replacement is inexpensive and often the practical answer.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
