Three things account for most dead ice makers: the shut-off arm is up, the fill tube has frozen solid, or the freezer is not cold enough to trigger a harvest. An ice maker generally needs the freezer at around −18°C (0°F) to cycle at all. Check the arm, check the temperature, and thaw the fill tube before you go anywhere near the module.
How an ice maker decides to make ice
The cycle is simple, and each stage is a place it can stop:
- It checks it is allowed to run
A wire arm or an infrared beam senses whether the bin is full. If the arm is raised — or something in the bin is holding it up — the ice maker stops deliberately.
- It checks the mould is cold enough
A thermostat in the ice maker waits until the mould has reached harvest temperature. If the freezer is running warm, this never happens and the ice maker simply sits idle.
- It fills
The water inlet valve opens for a few seconds and water runs through a small fill tube into the mould.
- It harvests
A heater briefly warms the mould, and a motor rotates the ejector arms to push the cubes into the bin. Then it starts again.
Understanding this tells you what to look for: no water at all points at the arm, the supply or the fill tube; water but no ejection points at the motor or the heater; ice that forms then fuses into a block points at temperature.

How to fix it
The ejector arms turn under motor power without warning. Unplug the refrigerator before putting your hand into the ice maker, and never try to free jammed ice with a knife or screwdriver while it is powered.
- Check the shut-off arm
Make sure the wire arm is in the down position and nothing in the bin is propping it up. A bag of frozen food shoved next to the bin will hold the arm up and stop production entirely — this is the single most common cause and the easiest to miss.
- Check the freezer temperature
Use a thermometer rather than the display. If the freezer is warmer than about −18°C (0°F), fix that first: the ice maker will not harvest reliably above it. Small, hollow or fused-together cubes are a classic sign of a freezer running slightly too warm.
- Thaw the fill tube
The small tube feeding water into the mould freezes readily, especially if a fill was interrupted. Unplug the fridge and warm the tube gently with a cloth soaked in hot water, or a hairdryer on its lowest setting held well back. Do not use anything sharp to clear it — the tube splits easily.
- Confirm the water supply
Check the shut-off valve behind or under the fridge is fully open. If the fridge has been moved recently, this is very often the answer. Test the dispenser if there is one: no water there either means the problem is upstream of the ice maker.
- Change the water filter
A clogged or long-overdue filter restricts flow enough to stop the mould filling properly. Most manufacturers suggest replacing every six months. Weak dispenser flow alongside no ice is a strong pointer.
- Reset the ice maker
Many models have a reset button on the underside or front of the unit, or a test procedure in the manual. Failing that, unplug the refrigerator for five minutes. Then allow a full 24 hours before judging — ice makers are slow to restart and typically produce their first batch several hours in.
After any repair, plumbing work or filter change, discard the first couple of batches. They pick up whatever was sitting in the line, and they often taste of it.
If it is a new installation
A newly installed or newly plumbed refrigerator needs patience. Give it a full 24 hours from switch-on before concluding anything: the freezer has to reach temperature before the ice maker will cycle at all, and the first batches are usually small and misshapen while air clears from the line.
Also check the arm has not been left in the raised transport position, and that the supply line is not kinked behind the appliance where it was pushed back against the wall.
When to call a professional
Call an engineer if the mould fills with water but never ejects, if the ice maker is silent with the arm down and the freezer at temperature, or if you find water leaking from the supply line connection. A failed inlet valve or ice maker module is a standard repair, but it involves both water and mains electrical connections inside the cabinet. Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
