A fridge that is running but not cooling is usually suffering from restricted airflow, not a dead compressor. Dirty condenser coils, a stopped condenser or evaporator fan, and a failed defrost system account for the large majority of cases. All three are checkable without opening the sealed refrigerant circuit.
First, check the obvious
- Is it actually running? Listen for the compressor and feel for vibration at the back. Silence and no light means a power problem — check the socket and breaker first.
- Has the thermostat been knocked? Dials get nudged during cleaning and control panels get changed by curious children.
- Is it overloaded or badly packed? Blocking the internal vents with food stops cold air circulating, even when everything is working.
- Was the door left ajar? A door held open by a bottle or a misaligned shelf will defeat any refrigerator.

Working through it
Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning coils or removing any internal panel. Condenser fans start without warning when the compressor cycles, and fan blades will take a fingertip.
- Clean the condenser coils
Find the coils — on the back on older models, underneath behind a kick plate on most modern ones. Vacuum them and brush out the dust with a coil brush. In a home with pets this alone restores cooling surprisingly often, because a blanket of dust stops the fridge rejecting heat.
- Check the condenser fan turns freely
With the machine unplugged, spin the fan by hand. It should turn easily. Clear any debris and check the blade is not fouling. Plug back in and confirm it runs when the compressor does.
- Check the evaporator fan
Open the freezer and press the door switch. On most models you should hear the evaporator fan running. Silence here, with a cold freezer and a warm fridge, points at that fan or its circuit.
- Look for frost on the evaporator
Remove the back panel inside the freezer. The coil should be lightly frosted, not encased in a solid block of ice. Heavy ice means the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or timer has failed — the ice blocks airflow and the fridge slowly warms.
- Test the door seals
Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal has lost its grip at that point. Clean the gaskets and check for splits or permanent distortion.
- Give it time before judging
After any of these fixes, allow a full 24 hours before deciding whether it has worked. A warm, fully loaded refrigerator takes many hours to pull back down to temperature.
If the freezer is cold but the fridge is not
This specific pattern is worth calling out because it narrows things down considerably. In most modern fridge-freezers, the fridge compartment is cooled by air blown over the freezer’s evaporator. If the freezer is holding temperature but the fridge is warm, the cold is being made and not delivered. Look at:
- the evaporator fan, which moves that air;
- the damper or air diffuser between the two compartments, which can stick shut;
- frost blocking the vent between freezer and fridge.
A failed compressor, by contrast, leaves both compartments warm.
When to call a professional
If the coils are clean, both fans run, there is no frost blockage and the seals are sound but the fridge still will not cool, the fault is likely in the sealed system — a refrigerant leak or the compressor itself. That work is restricted to technicians with refrigerant handling certification, and on an older appliance it is usually the point at which replacement makes more economic sense.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
