How to work through it

  4. Check connections at the fan itself

    With power off at the breaker, remove the canopy covering the mounting bracket and check the wire connections are secure. A connection that has worked loose over time, from vibration during normal fan use, is a genuine and fixable cause.

Remote-controlled fans

On fans controlled by a remote rather than a pull chain, first replace the remote’s batteries, then check the receiver unit inside the fan canopy is properly connected. A receiver can fail independently of the fan motor itself, and replacing just the receiver is far cheaper than assuming the whole fan needs replacing.

If it hums but does not turn

A fan that hums when switched on but the blades do not turn, or turn only weakly, often points at a failed capacitor — a small component that helps the motor start and run. This is a common, relatively inexpensive part to replace on most ceiling fan models, and is a different fault from the switching issues covered above.

Never force the blades to start by hand while powered

If a fan hums without turning, do not try to spin the blades by hand to get it started while it is switched on — this is both a shock risk and can damage the motor further. Switch it off and have the capacitor checked instead.
