Most household electrical faults are safe to diagnose, and a much smaller set is never safe to open up yourself. Checking a breaker, resetting a GFCI outlet, or replacing a lamp are all fine. Anything behind the cover of a consumer unit, distribution board, or fixed wiring in a wall is not — and this guide draws that line clearly at every step.
The one line that matters
Household electrical work splits cleanly into two categories, and knowing which side of the line a job falls on matters more than any specific fault.

A consumer unit or distribution board has live busbars that stay energised even with every individual breaker switched off — the main isolator, not the individual breakers, is what actually removes power from the board itself, and even then some sections may remain live. This is not a DIY inspection area, regardless of how confident you feel.

Warning signs that mean stop, not investigate
A short list of things that should end DIY troubleshooting immediately and prompt a call to an electrician the same day, not the same week:
- Scorch marks, discolouration, or melted plastic at any outlet, switch, or the consumer unit itself.
- A burning or hot-plastic smell from anywhere in the electrical system.
- Buzzing, crackling, or sizzling sounds from a socket, switch, or the panel.
- A socket or switch plate that feels warm to the touch during normal use.
- Anyone in the household receiving a shock or tingle from an appliance or fitting.
- Visible damage to a cable, especially anywhere it could be walked on or pinched.
None of the signs above are things to keep investigating on your own. Switch off the circuit at the breaker if you can do so safely, stop using the affected item, and call an electrician.
GFCI and AFCI protection, briefly
Ground-fault (GFCI) and arc-fault (AFCI) devices are more sensitive than a standard breaker by design, fitted specifically in areas — kitchens, bathrooms, outdoor outlets, bedrooms depending on local code — where the consequences of a fault are more serious. They sometimes trip on equipment that is not genuinely dangerous, and it is tempting to treat every trip as a nuisance. Resist that instinct: these devices exist to catch exactly the faults a standard breaker misses, and repeated tripping is worth having checked rather than dismissed.
When to call an electrician
Call a licensed electrician for anything behind a consumer unit, distribution board, or fixed wiring; for any of the warning signs above; for outlet or switch replacement; for repeated GFCI or AFCI tripping that is not clearly explained by a specific appliance; and for any new circuit or significant addition to the household’s wiring. In most jurisdictions this work is also legally restricted to qualified electricians — and for good reason.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
