A GFCI that will not reset is almost always detecting a real problem, not being oversensitive. The device compares current going out to current coming back, and if even a small amount is escaping to ground — through a damp connection, a failing appliance, or a wiring fault — it refuses to reset rather than let that current keep flowing. Unplugging everything from the circuit and resetting again is the fastest way to find out whether an appliance or the device itself is at fault.
How a GFCI decides to trip
A ground-fault circuit interrupter constantly compares the current flowing out on the live conductor to the current returning on the neutral. In normal operation these match closely. If some current is instead finding a path to ground — through moisture, a damaged cord, or a fault inside an appliance — the two numbers stop matching, and the GFCI cuts power in a fraction of a second, well before a standard breaker would react at all. Refusing to reset while that fault is still present is the device working correctly, not failing.

How to isolate the cause
- Unplug everything on that outlet and any downstream outlets
GFCI outlets often protect several ordinary outlets wired after them. Unplug every device connected anywhere in that chain, not just the GFCI outlet itself.
- Press reset with nothing plugged in
If it resets and holds with everything disconnected, the fault is in one of the appliances you unplugged, not the outlet or wiring.
- Reintroduce devices one at a time
Plug items back in individually, waiting between each, until you find the one that trips it again. That device has a ground fault and should not be used again until repaired or replaced — do not keep trying it on other outlets.
- Check for moisture
If the outlet is in a bathroom, kitchen, or outdoors, check for any dampness at the outlet itself or at a connected outdoor outlet in wet weather. Let everything dry fully before attempting another reset.
- If nothing plugged in still will not reset
With everything disconnected and the outlet still refusing to reset, the fault is most likely in the device itself or the wiring behind it, not in anything you can unplug your way out of.
Most GFCI outlets have a test button alongside reset — pressing test should trip it, and reset should then restore power. If test does nothing at all, the device has likely failed internally.
GFCIs wear out too
Unlike a standard outlet, a GFCI has electronics inside that degrade over time, particularly after tripping repeatedly over years of use. Manufacturers generally suggest testing them monthly using the built-in test button, and replacing a GFCI outlet is considered routine maintenance on older ones — not a sign that something else has necessarily gone wrong.

Call an electrician if the GFCI will not reset with everything unplugged and no moisture is present, if it trips repeatedly with no identifiable appliance cause, if the device is original to an older home and has never been tested or replaced, or if you suspect the fault is in the wiring itself rather than a connected appliance. Replacing a GFCI outlet is a routine job for an electrician and worth doing rather than living with a circuit that will not protect the outlets depending on it.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
