Before suspecting a wiring fault, find the nearest GFCI outlet and press reset. Many homes wire several ordinary outlets downstream of a single GFCI-protected one — one tripped GFCI in a kitchen or bathroom can silently kill power to outlets in an entirely different room. This single check resolves a large share of dead-outlet complaints.
Why outlets are wired in chains
To save on GFCI devices, which cost more than standard outlets, many homes wire one GFCI outlet at the start of a circuit and run several ordinary outlets downstream of it, all protected by that single device. If the GFCI trips, every outlet after it in the chain goes dead too — and because that GFCI outlet might be in the kitchen, the bathroom, or the garage, the dead outlet you are looking at might be nowhere near it.

How to check it
- Find and reset every GFCI outlet on the property
Check kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor outlets, and basements or utility rooms — the classic GFCI locations. Press the reset button firmly on each one, even if it does not look tripped; some show only a subtle indicator light difference. This single check solves more dead-outlet cases than any other.
- Check for a wall switch
Some outlets, particularly ones intended for lamps, are wired to a wall switch. Look for a switch nearby that seems unconnected to any obvious light, and try it.
- Reset the breaker properly
Switch the relevant breaker fully to off, then fully to on, rather than just glancing at its position. A breaker can trip only partially and still appear to be in the “on” position.
- Test with something else
Plug in a lamp or phone charger you know works, rather than relying on the original device, to rule out a fault in whatever you first tried.
- Check for a loose outlet
Gently wiggle the plug in the outlet — do not force it. If the outlet itself feels loose in the wall, or the plug does not seat firmly, this points at a worn or failing outlet.
Testing safely with a plug-in tester
An inexpensive plug-in circuit tester (readily available and inserted directly into the outlet like a plug) can confirm whether an outlet is live, correctly wired, or has an open ground — all without opening anything or touching wiring. This is the safe limit of DIY outlet diagnosis: identifying that a fault exists, not fixing what is behind the wall plate.
Diagnosing beyond a plug-in tester means working with the outlet’s wiring, which should only be done with the circuit confirmed off at the breaker and, for anything beyond straightforward like-for-like replacement, by a licensed electrician.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician if resetting every GFCI and the breaker does not restore power, if the outlet needs replacing, if you find any scorching, discolouration or a burning smell at the outlet, or if multiple outlets across different circuits are affected at once — that pattern suggests a fault closer to the panel rather than an individual outlet.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
