Flickering that is constant, confined to one light, or paired with warmth, buzzing or a smell points at a loose connection — and that is worth taking seriously.

The harmless kind: voltage sag
Large appliances draw a surge of current the instant they start — air conditioners, refrigerator compressors, well pumps, and washing machine motors are common culprits. That surge causes a brief, momentary dip in voltage across the circuit, visible as a quick flicker or dim-and-recover in nearby lights. This is normal in most homes and is simply how shared electrical circuits behave under a sudden load change.

How to check it

- Re-seat the bulb
For a single flickering fixture, start here. Switch off, let it cool if it has been on, and firmly re-seat or replace the bulb.
- Check bulb and dimmer compatibility
Not all LED bulbs work well with older dimmer switches designed for incandescent bulbs, and this mismatch is a very common cause of flickering on dimmed circuits specifically. Check the bulb packaging for dimmer compatibility, or try a standard (non-dimmed) fixture with the same bulb to rule this out.
- Note exactly when it happens
Keep a rough note of what else was running in the house each time it flickered. A consistent link to one appliance starting points at ordinary voltage sag rather than a fault.
