Ice on an air conditioner is a symptom, not the fault itself — something is restricting airflow across the evaporator coil. Clear the ice gently first, because you cannot properly diagnose anything with the coil buried in it, then work through the airflow checks. A dirty filter is the single most common cause.
Why the coil freezes
The evaporator coil is designed to run cold enough to pull heat and moisture from indoor air, but not so cold that the moisture on its surface freezes. When airflow across the coil drops — from a blocked filter, closed vents, or a dirty coil surface — less warm air arrives to balance the cooling effect, and the coil temperature falls low enough for condensation to freeze rather than drain away. Once ice starts forming, it blocks more airflow, and the problem accelerates.
Thaw it properly before diagnosing further
The evaporator coil and its thin aluminium fins are delicate and puncture or bend easily. A punctured coil is a refrigerant leak you have just created yourself, turning a free fix into an expensive repair.
- Switch the system to fan only, or off completely
Turn the thermostat to fan-only mode (if available) or switch cooling off entirely, but leave the indoor blower running if you can. Circulating air, without adding more cold, thaws the coil far more gently than doing nothing.
- Allow one to three hours
Ice this size does not clear in minutes. Put towels down around the indoor unit — a fully iced coil releases a surprising volume of water as it melts.
- Check the coil is genuinely clear
Once you can see the coil fins with no ice remaining, you are ready to look for the underlying cause. Restarting cooling on a still-frozen coil just restarts the same cycle.

Working through the airflow checks
- Replace or clean the filter
Hold a disposable filter to the light — if you cannot see through it, replace it. This resolves the majority of freezing complaints on its own.
- Open every supply vent and clear the return
Check nothing is blocking the vents in any room, and confirm the main return air grille is not obstructed by furniture, rugs, or curtains. Closing off too many rooms starves the whole system of return air even if individual vents look fine.
- Check the coil for visible dirt once thawed
A coil coated in dust restricts airflow the same way a dirty filter does. This is a job worth having a technician do as part of routine servicing if it looks heavily soiled — the fins are too delicate for aggressive DIY cleaning.
- Confirm the blower fan runs at normal strength
With the filter out, feel the airflow at a nearby vent. Noticeably weak airflow even with no filter in place suggests a blower motor or fan issue rather than a blockage.
- Avoid running AC in cool weather
If outdoor temperatures have dropped into the cool end of what your system is rated for, freezing becomes more likely regardless of airflow. This is a design limitation, not a fault.
- Restart and monitor
Once the coil is confirmed clear and airflow checks are done, restart cooling and check the coil again after an hour. If it is staying clear, you have found the cause. If it freezes again quickly, move to the next section.
When it points at refrigerant instead
If the filter is clean, vents and returns are clear, and the coil still freezes repeatedly, low refrigerant from a leak becomes the more likely explanation. This is not something to test for yourself — a certified technician needs to check refrigerant charge with proper gauges and, if it is low, locate and repair the leak rather than simply topping it up.
When to call a technician
Call an HVAC technician if the coil freezes again shortly after a full thaw with a clean filter and clear airflow, if you suspect a refrigerant leak, if the blower motor seems weak even without a filter installed, or if the ice has been heavy enough that you are concerned about coil damage. Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair.
