Short cycling means the system starts, runs briefly, and stops again well before it should — often every few minutes rather than running a full, efficient cycle. Beyond being ineffective at cooling, this repeated starting and stopping is genuinely hard on the compressor, which draws the most current and experiences the most wear at the moment of starting. A system with clean filters that still short cycles usually has a thermostat placement issue or is oversized for the space.
Why short cycling matters
A healthy air conditioner runs a full cooling cycle lasting somewhere from ten to twenty minutes or more, gradually bringing the room down to the set temperature before switching off. Short cycling — runs of just a few minutes, repeated frequently — means the system is stopping for reasons unrelated to actually reaching temperature. Every start draws a surge of current and puts mechanical stress on the compressor, so a unit that cycles unnecessarily often is ageing faster than it should, on top of doing a poor job of cooling.

Working through it
- Replace the filter
Start here, as with almost every AC fault. A clogged filter restricting airflow is a common and easily ruled-out cause.
- Check the thermostat’s location and surroundings
A thermostat placed in direct sunlight, near a lamp, close to a supply vent blowing directly on it, or on an exterior wall reads the temperature around itself rather than the room as a whole, and cycles the system based on that misleading local reading. Moving it, or being aware of the distortion, can explain cycling that otherwise looks erratic.
- Check the outdoor unit for restricted airflow
Clear at least 60 cm of space around the outdoor condenser and rinse the fins gently with a hose if they are visibly dirty. A struggling outdoor unit can overheat and trip a protective cut-out repeatedly.
- Look for ice on the indoor coil
If the coil is frozen, many systems will short cycle or shut down as a protective response. Clear the ice using the gentle thaw method — never chip it off — then address the underlying airflow cause.
- Test the thermostat itself
Replace batteries if it is battery powered, and check it responds sensibly to being adjusted a few degrees in either direction. A thermostat that behaves erratically even away from any heat source or draft may need replacing.
The oversizing problem
An air conditioner sized larger than a space actually needs cools the air quickly but shuts off before it has run long enough to properly dehumidify the room, and because it satisfies the thermostat so fast, it ends up cycling on and off frequently rather than running efficient, longer cycles. This is a design or installation issue rather than a fault that develops over time, and it typically shows up as a pattern present since the system was installed rather than something that got gradually worse.
