A low, steady buzz from a refrigerator is often just the compressor or a fan running — refrigerators are not silent. What matters is whether the buzz is new, has gotten louder, or comes with poor cooling. Those combinations point to a specific cause rather than normal operation.
What normal sounds like
A refrigerator hums while the compressor runs, and that hum can rise and fall in pitch as the compressor cycles on and off through the day. A quieter, higher-pitched note comes from the condenser and evaporator fans. None of this is a fault — it is the sound of a working fridge.
Common causes of an abnormal buzz

- Listen for a timing pattern
If the buzz only happens occasionally and briefly, it may simply be the water inlet valve filling the ice maker — this is normal.
- Check the condenser fan and coils
Unplug the fridge, find the condenser coils (behind or underneath depending on the model), and vacuum away dust. Spin the fan by hand to confirm it moves freely.
- Note whether cooling is affected
A buzz with no change in temperature performance is far less concerning than a buzz that has appeared alongside a warmer fridge or freezer.

If the fridge is level, nothing is touching the cabinet, the condenser fan and coils are clear, but the buzz is new, getting louder, or paired with reduced cooling, have a technician check the compressor and its mounts.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
