E-08 and C-d1 both relate to the motorised door lock that secures the oven door during a self-clean cycle. E-08 means that lock is not operating correctly and can leave the door locked shut until it clears. C-d1 means the control cannot confirm the door is locking or unlocking properly — normal baking and cooking usually still work, but self-clean is blocked until it is resolved.
E-08 — door lock malfunction
E-08 signals that the motorised latch responsible for locking the door during self-clean is not working as expected. In practice this often means the door is locked shut and will not open, or that a self-clean cycle will not start because the lock never fully engages — sometimes with a clicking or grinding noise from behind the control panel as the lock motor struggles.
If the door is locked after a self-clean cycle, the cavity may still be extremely hot. Let the oven cool completely before attempting anything, and never pry or force the door — the lock mechanism and glass can both be damaged, and a hot oven poses a burn risk.
C-d1 — door lock confirmation error
C-d1 means the control board cannot confirm the door is locking or unlocking correctly — required for a safe self-clean cycle. It is usually caused by a loose wire connection, a fault with the door lock motor or switch, or a misaligned lock. Standard baking and cooking functions typically remain available while C-d1 is showing; only self-clean is affected until it is resolved.
How to fix it
- Let the oven cool completely
If the door is locked after self-clean, turn the oven off at the breaker and wait at least 30 minutes for any residual heat to dissipate before doing anything else.
- Try the manual unlock sequence
Some Samsung models support a manual unlock: press Cancel, then hold Broil for about three seconds. Check your model’s manual, since the exact sequence varies.
- Power reset
Turn off the oven at the circuit breaker and wait about five minutes, then restore power and test with a low-temperature bake cycle rather than jumping straight to self-clean.
- Clean the door latch area
For C-d1 specifically, check the door hinges and latch area for built-up grime or charred food debris that could be physically blocking the lock mechanism — this alone resolves the code in a good number of cases.
When to call a professional
If the manual unlock and power reset do not clear E-08, or C-d1 persists after cleaning the latch area, the lock motor assembly behind the control panel needs professional diagnosis — this is not an easy DIY access point, and typical professional repair costs run $150–$300.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
