If you smell burning from an outlet or switch, do not touch it. Switch off the breaker feeding that circuit if you can safely identify and reach it, stop using anything plugged into that outlet, and do not attempt to open the outlet or investigate further yourself.
What to do in the first few minutes

Unplug nearby devices only by pulling the plug itself if it is cool and safe to reach, not by touching the outlet or switch plate.
- Switch off the breaker for that circuit
If you know which breaker feeds that outlet and can reach the panel safely, switch it off. If you are not certain which breaker it is, and you can do so safely, switching off the main isolator is an acceptable precaution until an electrician can confirm the specific circuit.
- Check for visible smoke or flames
If you see actual smoke or flame, treat this as a fire emergency — leave the property if necessary and call emergency services. A smell alone, with no visible smoke, still warrants immediate caution but is a different level of urgency than visible fire.
- Ventilate the room
Open windows once it is safe to do so.
- Do not plug anything into that outlet again
Not even briefly, not even to test it. Treat it as unusable until an electrician has inspected it.

What you can safely check
With the circuit confirmed off at the breaker, there is very little productive DIY checking to do here — this is one of the few situations where the safest and most useful action is to stop rather than investigate further yourself. What is reasonable:
- Note exactly which outlet, and whether anything specific was plugged in at the time.
- Check if the smell is actually coming from a plugged-in appliance rather than the outlet itself — unplug the device (once cool, by the plug, not the outlet) and see if the smell was localised to it.
- Look, without touching, for any visible scorching, melted plastic, or discolouration around the outlet or switch plate.
- Check whether other outlets on the same circuit show any signs of warmth or discolouration.
Even with the breaker off, opening the outlet to look inside is a job for an electrician. A loose or damaged connection can still present a risk when disturbed, and identifying the exact fault correctly matters more than satisfying curiosity about what it looks like.
Do not use it again until it is checked
A burning smell that seems to go away on its own is not the same as the underlying fault having resolved. A loose connection that overheated once will do so again, often worse, because the damage from overheating tends to make the connection looser over time rather than better. Leave the circuit off and the outlet unused until it has been properly inspected.
When to call an electrician
Call an electrician the same day for any burning smell from an outlet or switch that is not clearly traced to a specific plugged-in appliance. Call emergency services first for any visible smoke or flame. Do not wait to see if the smell recurs, and do not attempt to use the outlet again in the meantime to test whether the problem has gone away.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
