A bake or broil element that glows red, goes dark, and then glows again a little later is very often the oven’s thermostat cycling the element on and off to hold a steady temperature — completely normal behaviour, not a fault. A genuine element failure looks different: a visible break, split, or blistered section in the coil, usually paired with the oven no longer reaching temperature at all.
What is normal cycling
Electric ovens do not run their elements continuously at full power — the thermostat switches the element on to bring the oven up to temperature, then off once it reaches the target, then back on as the temperature drifts down, repeating throughout the bake. Watching an element glow, dim, and glow again over the course of several minutes is this cycle working exactly as intended.
What a genuine failure looks like

How to check it
- Watch a full preheat cycle
Time how long the element glows continuously before cycling off, and confirm it does eventually reach and hold temperature — that pattern is normal.
- Inspect the element visually
With the oven off and cool, look closely along the entire visible length of the element for any break, split or blistering.
- Check how long the oven takes to preheat
A significant slowdown compared to what you remember, even without a visible break, can indicate a weakening element.
When to call a technician
A visibly broken or blistered element is a common, generally inexpensive DIY-friendly part to replace on many models, but if you are not comfortable working with the oven’s internal wiring, or if you saw any sparking, have a technician handle the replacement.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
