An oven that runs hot in one spot and cool in another is most often a single failing heating element, a door seal no longer holding heat in, or bakeware and racks positioned in a way that blocks proper air circulation. None of these usually stop the oven from reaching temperature overall — they just distribute that heat unevenly.

How to diagnose it
- Test with a simple, even bake
Bake something flat and simple, like a single tray of cookies, in the centre of the oven with nothing else inside. Note exactly where it browns fastest and slowest.
- Check the door seal
Run a hand around the door gasket for a clear break in the seal, and check for a gap when the door is closed by holding a piece of paper in the door and gently pulling it — resistance means a good seal.
- Inspect the bake element (electric ovens)
With the oven off and cool, look at the element for a visible break, discolouration, or a section that glows less brightly than the rest during preheating.
- Reposition bakeware
Leave at least a couple of centimetres of clearance around trays and dishes, and avoid pressing pans against the oven walls.
Getting airflow right
Ovens rely on air circulating around food to distribute heat evenly. A single large tray covering most of a rack, or several dishes crowded together, blocks that circulation and creates the exact hot-spot, cold-spot pattern many home cooks blame on the oven itself rather than the loading.
When to call a technician
If a simple, uncrowded test bake still shows a clear hot or cold side, and the door seal looks intact, have a technician test the bake element’s resistance and inspect the temperature sensor — a partially failed element is a common, inexpensive fix once confirmed.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
