120°F (49°C) is the generally recommended water heater setting for most households — high enough to be genuinely useful and to limit bacterial growth in the tank, low enough to meaningfully reduce scald risk, particularly for children and older adults. It is a balance point, not an absolute rule, and there are legitimate reasons to set it differently.
Why 120°F is the standard recommendation
At 120°F, water takes several minutes of continuous contact to cause a scald burn, giving a real safety margin over the significantly shorter times at higher temperatures. It is also generally warm enough to be effective for dishwashing, laundry and bathing without needing to be mixed down much with cold water.
When a higher setting makes sense
- Households at higher risk from bacterial growth — some public health guidance recommends a higher tank temperature, generally 140°F (60°C), specifically to control bacterial growth in the tank, with a tempering or mixing valve fitted at the outlet to bring the water actually delivered to taps back down to a safer temperature.
- A dishwasher without its own internal heating booster may perform better with hotter incoming water, though most modern dishwashers heat their own water internally regardless of tank setting.
- Households that consistently run out of hot water may get more usable hot water from the same tank size at a higher setting, since more cold water can be mixed in at the tap before it feels lukewarm.
When a lower setting makes sense
- Homes with young children or older adults, where scald risk is a bigger concern than running short of hot water.
- Households wanting to reduce energy use — every degree the tank runs lower reduces standby heat loss and heating costs somewhat.
How to check and adjust it
- Find the thermostat
On electric tanks, this is usually a dial behind a small access panel on the side of the tank (turn off power before removing the panel). On gas tanks, it is typically a dial on the gas control valve near the bottom.
- Check the current setting
Many dials show a temperature scale directly; others only show low-to-high markings, in which case checking actual water temperature at a tap with a thermometer is more reliable.
- Adjust gradually
Make small adjustments and wait several hours before testing again — tank temperature does not change instantly, and testing too soon after an adjustment gives a misleading reading.
- Test at the tap
Run hot water at a tap for a minute or two and measure with a kitchen thermometer to confirm the actual delivered temperature, which can differ slightly from the tank dial.
When to call a plumber
If you want to run the tank hotter for bacterial control while keeping delivered water safely cooler, have a plumber fit a tempering (mixing) valve — this gets you both benefits rather than a compromise between them. Also call a plumber if the thermostat does not seem to respond to adjustment at all.
Stop and call a qualified appliance technician or electrician if you find scorched or melted wiring, smell burning, see water that has reached electrical components, or if the fault returns immediately after a repair. Never bypass a safety device — thermal fuses, door interlocks and flood switches fail for a reason, and defeating one converts a broken appliance into a fire or flood risk.
